April on the Camino Francés brings mild daytime temperatures ranging from around 10°C to 22°C, with significantly colder nights that can drop to just above freezing at higher elevations. The route warms progressively as you move south through Navarre and into La Rioja, where daytime averages reach 20°C, before cooling slightly again in the Castilian plateau and notably in Galicia toward the coast. Nights remain consistently cold throughout the month regardless of region, so thermal layers are essential even on warmer days.

Rainfall is frequent and concentrated in specific sections. Galicia experiences the wettest conditions, with rain expected on virtually every day of your walk through those eight stages, while the central plateau around Castille and León sees rain on roughly two days out of three. Conversely, La Rioja is notably drier. Expect showers rather than prolonged downpours for most of the journey, though wind on exposed sections—particularly ridgelines and high passes—can drive rain horizontally and intensify the chill. Maximum gusts exceed 66 kilometres per hour in exposed areas.

Elevation changes significantly affect conditions. Foncebadón, the highest point at 1,426 metres, will be substantially colder and windier than lower valleys. Nights at altitude can be harsh, occasionally dropping below freezing. Start walking early each day to avoid afternoon rain and wind that typically build toward evening, and carry waterproof layers that work effectively in wind, not just light drizzle.
