September on the Camino Francés offers mild to warm conditions overall, with daytime temperatures ranging from 17°C to 27°C, though the character changes noticeably as you progress. The southern sections through Navarre and La Rioja remain pleasantly warm with days averaging around 24–25°C, while the later stages in Castille and León and especially Galicia cool considerably as you move northwestward, with temperatures dropping to around 21–22°C. Nights are consistently cool throughout the month, falling to 5–17°C depending on location and altitude.

Rain is frequent but generally moderate rather than heavy, with an average of 76mm across the entire route. Navarre and Galicia experience the most rainy days—roughly half the days you walk will see precipitation—while La Rioja and central Castille and León are drier. Wind gusts can reach 52km/h, particularly problematic on exposed ridgelines and high passes where you have minimal shelter. The Pyrenean sections near the start and the higher plateaus of Castille present the most exposure.

Elevation amplifies temperature swings considerably. Foncebadón, the highest point at 1426m, will be notably colder than the starting elevation of 165m at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, with nights at altitude dropping close to freezing. Pack layers that you can add and remove throughout the day, and carry reliable rain gear; starting walks early allows you to descend to warmer elevations before afternoon weather deteriorates.
