The route begins relatively milder in Porto at around 15°C but gradually cools as you progress northward and inland through Braga and Viana do Castelo. The steepest temperature decline occurs once you cross into Galicia, where cooler Atlantic influences combine with higher ground to produce noticeably chillier conditions, particularly on exposed sections above 200 metres elevation.

Rainfall is the defining feature of December walking here. While the Portuguese sections see scattered rain, Galicia expects wet weather on virtually every stage, with an average of 75mm spread across seven days of persistent drizzle and showers rather than isolated downpours. Wind gusts regularly reach 60km/h, especially on ridgelines and coastal approaches, which will steal warmth and slow your pace considerably.

Elevation changes are modest overall, but nights grow significantly colder at higher points, and any exposed hilltop sections amplify wind chill dramatically. Start each day early to maximise daylight, which dwindles to around eight hours by month's end. Layer generously and carry waterproof outer shells rather than relying on single heavy jackets, allowing you to adjust as conditions and exertion levels change throughout long walking days.
